Up Through Trees June 27, 2011
There are a couple squirrels that always scurry across the fence outside my room, racing for our peach tree on which the fruits have just ripened. My dad noticed them trying to steal some fruit this morning, and decided to scare them away with our pellet gun. Instead of shooting in their direction, he walked over.
While one of them scurried off, the other one just stood there, as if it were testing my dad. My dad walked right up to it, pointing the gun at the squirrel, but it still wouldn’t run away. He finally prodded the squirrel a few times with the end of the rifle, but it just wagged its tail and defiantly stood its ground.
In the end my dad was so impressed with its bravery (or stupidity) that he let it run over to the tree and steal some fruit.
Later in the day one of the squirrels stopped on the fence right in front of my window and started staring at me for a really, really long time — long enough for me to fetch my 70-200mm lens and replace the one I had mounted. Took some pictures while I continued to stare at me, and then kept shooting even as it slowly crept over to the peach tree.
Those squirrels are getting pretty brave.
Went to slide hill park again in the evening and shot some hoops with my dad while my mom ran into an old friend and strolled around the park with her.
