Joseph bought a chicken today, and wanted to roast it for dinner. We didn't have a baking sheet or a rack, but that didn't stop us. Instead we used a different metal thingy that we have in our oven. It has holes in it, so we put a metal pot underneath to catch the juices. We then stuck it into the oven, set it to 450F, and left it.

After about ten minutes, we realized that smoke was coming out of the oven. We looked in and saw that a little of the oil/juice/stuff was missing the pot and hitting the bottom of the oven. Thinking it was no big deal, we closed the oven again, opened up the windows, and went back to our business.

After a few more minutes, we realized that it was getting smokier and smokier. We went over to the oven, opened it up, and saw that there were pretty large flames at the bottom of the oven. Realizing that flames in an electric oven probably isn't a good thing, we quickly turned it off. By this time, the whole apartment had filled with smoke, and the smoke continued to come out of the oven.

One of us took a cardboard ramen box and furiously fanned the smoke detector so it wouldn't go off, while the other stayed in the kitchen, trying to fan the smoke out the window.

We decided that we had to stop the chicken juice stuff from hitting the bottom of the oven, so we covered one of the oven racks with aluminum foil, and put two pie tins on top in an attempt to catch most of the stray juice.

Putting this rack under the chicken and pot rack, we set the temperature to a lower 325, and crossed our fingers.

Luckily, this time nothing caught on fire, and in about two hours time we were enjoying some pretty darn delicious chicken.

Here is a screenshot of my twitter account this evening.

Joseph and I should start our own cooking show. It could be called, "Barbarian Cooking with Joe and Mike".
