This afternoon I took my brother to dairy queen on the way to dropping him off at tennis practice. I got a kit kat blizzard while he got a vanilla shake. Once he was at practice, I went to the Yolo County library to return some books, and then decided to document the library a little by walking around and taking pics.
Though I enjoy posting photographs of wildlife, family, and friends on this photoblog, sometimes I feel like photographs like the ones I took today may be the most valuable in the future, even though they're so plain and dull in the present time.
One of the things I'm hoping to do with this photoblog is capture photographs that provide informative and valuable glimpses into the present time when viewed in the future. Though a photograph of a field, lake, or tree might be beautiful to look at, the "value" of the photograph will probably still be roughly the same as it is now when viewed tens of years in the future. However, a boring photograph of a person on the street or a car on the road might turn from an ordinary, boring photograph into a precious piece of history, since it's possible that the automobile as we know it won't be used sometime in the near future as technology continues to advance.
This is one of the things I keep in mind when selecting 20 photographs from a huge pool of potential photographs on certain days. I feel good documentary photographs get better and better with time like good wines, but I'm completely ignorant with regard to wine, so I'll stop the thought there.
Even though my snapshots today are very ordinary and taken with only a point and shoot, maybe I'll look back on these photographs sometime in the future when the library is drastically different or gone...
