Went to algorithms discussion at 11, and then worked a little in soda before going to ko-ops at 1:30. At 3:30, I left for the apartment, and at 4, I left for home in davis via joseph's car. I went home early today because of my telebears appointment at 6, and took two hours to get home because of traffic.
I was also going home early because there was a chance my dad would need me to stay home with my brother so he could go to his fellowship meeting.
My brother has been sick for the past few days with a fever, but is getting better.
At home, my dad showed the slides that were developed after we dropped off a twenty year old roll of undeveloped slide film at longs.
My dad thought there was photographs relating to the tiananmen square protests on the roll, but they either weren't there, or didn't show up because they weren't taken properly. Most of the exposures developed well, though some of them were completely black (again, perhaps because of technical problems).
I was really amazed that the film still developed without a drastic loss in image quality... Maybe the brand was good, or maybe it's because it was slide film. Seeing how badly the film that had expired three years ago developed a few days ago, I didn't expect this film to develop at all. My last guess would be that it developed well because it was exposed when it was fresh and then left around for 20 years, rather than having been left around for 20 years and then exposed.
Looking at the photographs for the first time was a pretty cool experience. These photographs were never before seen, and taken about twenty years ago. My grandparents look much younger than they look now, and I appear in quite a few of them as a toddler.
We actually didn't get any prints made, only developing. I tried scanning the slides using my flatbed scanner, but that didn't work very well at all. Later, I figured out that I could use the bulb cover thing on my desk lamp as a lightbox and take photographs of the slides using my digital camera. Afterwards, I corrected the skew and fixed up colors as much as I could using photoshop.
25 rolls of expired 24 exposure 100 ISO film also arrived this week. Turns out they actually expired in 2005. The seller didn't mention it in the auction, and offered to refund my money if it doesn't turn out well. I might sell off this film as expired film on craigslist, since I only paid $15 for the lot.
In the first of the ancient photographs I posted today, I appear twice. The photograph looks weird because it was double exposed, meaning two exposures covered the same parts of a piece of film. The second me looks like a ghost toddler hovering over my aunt.
My dad tells me he took photographs of the "Goddess of Democracy" during the protests. If it was actually on this roll of film, then it's really sad that it didn't develop. Hopefully it's on some other roll of film that we have "lost" somewhere else. Hopefully...
Looking back at the entry I made on the day I found this roll of film, I said the film was exposed "during" the protests. I guess it was around the time period, but none of the photographs turned out to have anything to do with the protests. Oops.
anna on April 19, 2008 10:21 AMbaby pictures are always really fun to look at, thanks for putting them up!
sarah on April 22, 2008 02:14 AMoh my gosh! I love the color of the old slides. my grandfather also has a lot of them but... there are so many i don't think we should go to longs'. was it expensive?
and is the third to last picture of you? the baby?
michael on April 22, 2008 02:52 AMLongs said they would develop the roll for a dollar or two, but I guess because it was slide film it ended up being more... I think it was about $5 for the roll.
Yeah, that's me.
